The Ring Sting
Created by T.A. Hamilton

This trick is good solid commercial magic that will
entertain a small or large group.

You begin by asking to borrow a ladies finger ring. Upon receiving the ring
it is wrapped inside a handkerchief and placed on display inside a goblet.
The goblet stands in full view of the audience while the magician proceeds.

You tell of a similar ring which was to be the wedding ring of a young
couple. Many years prior to the young mans wedding plans, his
Grandfather had told him how to keep valuables hidden in the kitchen
vegetable bin for safe keeping. He thought this was just the paranoia of
an old man, and promptly decided that he would never hide any of his
valuables in a vegetable bin. However, as he grew he forgot what the
old man had shown him long ago. As the wedding day approached,
The young gentleman was so worried that his expensive wedding ring
might be lost that each night he would wrap it in his handkerchief and
place it in a drinking glass on the night stand by his bed.

This setup protected the ring for several weeks prior to the wedding.
However when he awoke on the day of the wedding, he reached
to the handkerchief to obtain the wedding ring but to his astonishment,
it had vanished. The young man was very upset, naturally so...
But as he headed to the kitchen to call his fiance' and tell her
the bad news, he remembered something his grandfather had
shown him many years before. As he entered the kitchen, he noticed
a sack of potatos sitting on the countertop. In desperation, He grabbed
a knife and cut open a potato. To his own amazement and true
to his grandfathers words long ago, the man discovered the ring
buried deep within the potato. At that very moment there
was a knock on the door, and there standing at the door was
the young man's Grandfather with a knowing smile on his face.

The secret lies in the tiny amount of preparation and
your skill of showmanship.

In the process of telling the tall tail above, you are suiting
actions to words. When you get to the part of the story
where the young man wrapped the ring in a handkerchief,
you apparently will do the same. However... In performance,
have your assistant bring out a tray with the goblet, a knife and
the handkerchief. Under cover of this action the ring is passed
unseen to the assistant. This may be accomplished in any
way that suits the performer. The assitant goes off stage as
the Magician continues with his storyline. Once off stage,
the assitant goes to a table where there is a bowl of
vegetables... Carrots, Onions, Tomatoes, Turnips, etc.
On top of the pile is One Lone Potatoe. The potato is
prepared ahead of time, and has a piece cut out of it.
It is cut along the side and is a "V" shaped cut. The
Cut Piece of Potato has the bottom of the "V" Cut Off
to allow the ring to be inserted and the piece replaced,
covering the ring. When the cut piece is replaced, the
potato should look normal from all sides. At the
appropriate moment in the story, the assistant brings
onstage the bowl of vegetables with the Potato on top.

Now all the Magician has to do is complete the story
and bring the Illusion to a Beautiful Conclusion.

This premise is just a basis and you should feel free to
