Here is a card trick which should prove to be a good
Solid After Dinner or Hospitality Suite
Closeup Routine for You. Your audience will
be scratching their heads over this one...

EFFECT:
The magician tells a story about the Great Detective
prowess of Sherlock Holmes. He proposes an experiment
in which the spirit of Holmes will be asked to assist in the
location of a selected card.

SET-UP:
ONE Regular Deck of New or
Nearly New Playing Cards and a Magnifying Glass
of some sort.

______________________________________

Speak about the skills of the famous detective
Sherlock Holmes including any funny anecdotes
you care to toss in for entertainment's sake. Then propose
the experiment wherein the spirit of Holmes will assist
you in locating something hidden. Since you just happen to
be using a deck of cards, why not use that.

That's the Build-Up.

PERFORMANCE:

Have a spectator select a card. Cut that card to the top.
Have the spectator take the card while you turn your
back. Tell the spectator to press his or her thumb print
firmly onto the corners of the card. While they are busy doing
this, you take a moment to glance at the bottom card of
the deck. This is your KEY CARD!

When the spectator has indicated that they are finished,
turn around, place the deck face down on the table, and
ask the spectator to place their selected card on top of the
deck and lose the card by cutting it into the deck.

Now take out the Magnifying Glass. Ask the Spirit of
Sherlock Holmes to enter the glass.

Turn the deck Face Up.

Spread the deck across the table.

Pick up the glass and begin to examine each card.

It should be obvious to you now that the spectator's
selected card will be on top of the KEY CARD!

Make a big deal about the finger prints being smudged.
Dirty Hands, Too Much Oil in the skin etc.

Finally after much by-play reveal the selected card,
and take your bow. You deserve it!
